On The Edge Weekend

The creators of the award winning Kendal Mountain Festival bring you a weekend of films, guest speakers, live music & great food – known as On The Edge! The event is taking place on 25-27 July in Langdale, in the heart of the Lake District. In partnership with the National Trust, the event will be based at the charity’s Sticklebarn Tavern. The theme for this event is ‘Celebrating Technology in the Outdoors’ with fascinating insights and presentations from our event partners. Prepare to be enlightened and enthused!

Main speakers include famous big-wall climber and funny man Andy Kirkpatrick with his daughter Ella, talking about their ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan last year when Ella was just 13. Filmmaker Ian Burton recounts the challenges of shooting extreme footage, whilst Nigel Vardy (AKA Mr Frostbite) recalls the demise of his digits. The weekend will kick off on Friday night with ‘The Raven’s Pit’, an evening of fire, tall tales and Langdale climbing. Fire masters James McHaffie and Andy Kirkpatrick will be stoking the stories, so be prepared for several pints-worth of the hardest, loosest, uncanny, and perhaps unfounded tales of climbing heritage.

There’s a full programme of expert presenters with Irish outdoor chef Kieran Creevy leading foraging walks and cooking up exciting meals with the resulting haul, while outdoor brands and technology experts, ViewRanger, will talk about smart devices and the outdoors. Garmin will present their new nifty Virb camera and GPS devices, Haglöfs will present outdoor clothing technologies and Lowe Alpine will present the ‘art of carrying your load’ with innovative new pack designs. If your head or legs hurt from all the stimulation then the latest Nordisk tented village will provide a comfortable chill-out zone for you to sit back and enjoy the surroundings.

Plus there’s great music with Handbrake Shirley, Righteous Bees and Scrogans Run on Saturday, and The Seals, the rockin’ Cumbrian band, on Sunday.

With plenty of camping and accommodation close by, the Festival promises to be popular, although with limited space at the venue the organisers are advising people to book early!
